adelaide lost first 3 matches of season, including heavy defeats port adelaide , sydney in first 2 matches @ adelaide oval. won next three, setting tone inconsistent season. move adelaide oval paid dividends league-best average home crowd of 48,046, performances on field poor club lost 6 out of twelve games @ venue. proved costly as, second year running, crows narrowly missed finals, time finishing tenth 11 wins , 11 losses.


daniel talia won malcolm blight medal in 2014 rory sloane. talia named @ full-back in all-australian team, along brodie smith on half flank. eddie betts led goalscoring in first year @ adelaide career-best 51 goals. matt crouch nominated rising star award 28-possession effort against greater western sydney in round 5. long-time players ben rutten , jason porplyzia retired @ end of 2014 season, key defender rutten kicking goal – ninth of career – final kick, in round 23 against st kilda.


adelaide did not take part in 2014 trading period until final minutes, when obtained kyle cheney , luke lowden hawthorn amidst exchange of draft picks (receiving 43, 47 , 59 in exchange 31, 50 , 68). on-traded pick 47 along own pick 10 geelong s picks 14 , 35. in draft selected jake lever first pick @ 14.


shortly after finish of home-and-away season, on 17 september 2014, brenton sanderson sacked coach, club citing different perspectives on team. 3 weeks later, port adelaide assistant coach phil walsh appointed replacement. on 14 january 2015, taylor walker appointed new captain of crows, replacing van berlo ahead of tipped candidates sloane , dangerfield.
