in judaism, qorban of variety of sacrificial offerings described , commanded in torah. common usages animal sacrifice (zevah זֶבַח), zevah shelamim (the peace offering) , olah (the holocaust or burnt offering). qorban animal sacrifice, such bull, sheep, goat, deer or dove underwent shechita (jewish ritual slaughter). sacrifices consist grain, meal, wine, or incense.


the hebrew bible says yahweh commanded israelites offer offerings , sacrifices on various altars. sacrifices offered hands of kohanim. before building temple in jerusalem, when israelites in desert, sacrifices offered in tabernacle. after building solomon s temple, sacrifices allowed there. after temple destroyed, sacrifices resumed when second temple built until destroyed in 70 ce. after destruction of second temple sacrifices prohibited because there no longer temple, place allowed halakha sacrifices. offering of sacrifices briefly reinstated during jewish–roman wars of second century ce , continued in communities thereafter.


the samaritans, group historically related jews, practice animal sacrifice in accordance law of moses.
