cemaes head lies on northern edge of former medieval barony (or lordship) of cemais, known cantref cemais, 1 of so-called 7 cantrefs of dyfed .


cemais (sometimes spelled kemes after 1 of several variations found in medieval orthography) occupied coastal area between teifi estuary , fishguard, , northern , southern slopes of preseli hills, , had area of 359 km. robert fitz martin (c. 10?? – c. 1159), norman knight west of england supported henry in campaigns in wales, became first lord of cemais , founded nearby st dogmaels abbey.
