born in bellshill, brownlie started career @ ayr united. brownlie debuted honest men on 8 july 2012 in first round of scottish challenge cup, playing full match of 3–1 defeat, away east stirlingshire. 2 weeks later, brownlie made first scottish football league appearance, playing full match in 1–1 scottish division 2 draw stenhousemuir @ somerset park. in last of 16 league games season, 2–1 loss @ forfar athletic, brownlie sent off after 2 bookings: first conceding penalty kick, foul on chris templeman , second dissent after referee s decision award spot kick.

in august 2013, brownlie joined partick thistle. brownlie scored in 4–0 win on falkirk firhill club s under-20 s month did not make senior appearance , loaned out scottish championship club cowdenbeath on 17 january 2014 remainder of season. brownlie made 11 league appearances blue brazil , played 4 play-off matches retained status in second tier of scottish football, victories on former club ayr united , dunfermline athletic respectively.
at end of season brownlie joined cowdenbeath on permanent deal. brownlie played 23 league games in season ended in relegation, although brownlie did manage score first senior career goal on 14 february 2015, away dumbarton in match blue brazil won 2–1.
queen of south
on 17 june 2015, brownlie returned scottish championship, after signing queen of south. queens manager @ time, james fowler, had been team-mate of brownlie s @ central park, in loan spell in fife in 2014 parent club kilmarnock.
