adair born in houston, texas, son of irish blacksmith, , attended reagan high school. began fighting oil fires after returning serving in army bomb disposal unit during world war ii. started career working myron kinley, original blowout/oil firefighting pioneer. pioneered technique of using v-shaped charge of high explosives (the munroe effect being used during war , used in bazookas , atom bomb), high velocity blast of snuff fire. founded red adair co. inc. in 1959, , on course of career battled more 2,000 land , offshore oil well, natural gas well, , similar spectacular fires. adair gained global attention in 1962 when tackled fire @ gassi touil gas field in algerian sahara nicknamed devil s cigarette lighter, 450 foot (140 m) pillar of flame burned 12:00 pm november 13, 1961 9:30 on april 28, 1962. in december 1968, adair sealed large gas leak @ australian gas , oil platform off victoria s southeast coast.
in 1977, , crew (including asger boots hansen , manohar man dhumtara-kejriwal) contributed capping of biggest oil blowout have occurred in north sea (and @ time largest offshore blowout worldwide, in terms of volume of crude oil spilled), @ ekofisk bravo platform, located in norwegian sector , operated phillips petroleum company (now conocophillips). in 1978, adair s top lieutenants hansen , ed coots matthews left found competitor boots & coots international control inc. in 1988, adair again in north sea helped put out uk sector piper alpha oil platform fire. @ age 75, adair took part in extinguishing oil fires in kuwait set retreating iraqi troops after gulf war in 1991.
adair retired in 1993, , sold red adair service , marine company global industries. top employees (brian krause, raymond henry, rich hatteberg) left in 1994 , formed own company, international control (iwc).
adair died in 2004 @ age 89, survived wife, son , daughter.
