last remains of former vesborg castle
today of vesborg, has collapsed , tumbled sea below, last part of walls apparently fell under storm on christmas eve of 1875. remains, small part of foundations of gate tower, have guarded drawbridge on impressive moat, 10,5 m deep , 20 m wide , particularly preserved. access road located on eastern hill, 4 m wide, cobbled small stones , shows no signs of wear.
the site , surroundings subject archaeological examination in 2009, part of larger project concerning known castle sites of samsø. conducted broad cooperation between national museum of denmark, moesgård museum, ecomuseum samsø , cultural heritage agency.
the name vesborg literally means ves -castle or ves -fortress in english. in earliest known written form ves spelled wes , derived old norse veisa or dialect vese , meaning swampy place. areas east, north , west of castle hill lowlying , have @ point during castles foundation been rather swampy or wet.
