illinois state university offers variety of study programs within spectrum of music. more fifteen ensemble opportunities available students on-campus, plus multiple chamber music ensembles, , musical theatre/opera productions. admission program through audition. there private instruction opportunities taught professors, not teaching assistants, on wind, brass, , percussion instruments, piano, voice, , strings, including classical guitar.

the annual red note new music festival @ illinois state university week-long event features outstanding performances of contemporary concert music. highlights of past seasons include appearances ensemble mise-en, city of tomorrow, momenta quartet, orchid ensemble, fulcrum point new music ensemble, color field ensemble, spektral quartet, del sol quartet, loadbang, , ensemble dal niente. featured guest composers have included stephen hartke, steven stucky, joan tower, lee hyla, sydney hodkinson, , augusta read thomas. red note holds annual composition competition brings in entries around world.
