the edifice built in white stone mount conero, apses protruding transept s ends , elevated body, dome @ crossing, in correspondence nave. external surfaces feature decoration of lombard bands. bell tower in isolated position. mentioned 1314 , built above pre-existing late 13th-century tower.

the 1189 balustrade tiles


the façade, divided 3 section, preceded wide staircase; above 13th-century romanesque portal formed round arch supported 4 columns. anterior ones stand on lions in veronese red marble, while rear ones, added later luigi vanvitelli, on simple pedestal.


under arches 4 reliefs depicting symbols of evangelists. portal attributed giorgio da como (c. 1228), , in romanesque-gothic style, built in conero white stone mount conero , veronese red marble. decorated series of columns holding ogival arches reliefs of saints busts, animal figures , vegetable motifs. above portal large oculus romanesque frame between 2 single mullioned windows.


the dome 1 of ancient in italy. has ogival shape dodecagonal drum, standing on square base small decorative arches. built on crossing in 13th century, , attributed margaritone d arezzo (1270). church of sant antonio @ padua , st. mark s basilica in venice, 1 of few contemporary examples of domes built in churches, instead in separate baptisteries. copper cover added in 16th century.

the interior on greek cross plan. arms divided nave , 2 aisles, re-used antique roman columns byzantine capitals. @ crossing internal part of dome, has pendentives byzantine-style figures of praying angels. dome supported cruciform cluster piers.


the side arms of transept end in elevated apses, while central arm of presbytery lost original apse during enlargement works of 18th century. naves have hull-shaped, painted wooden vaults dating 15th century. @ beginning of northern nave monument fermo warrior 1530.


the south transept home chapel of crucifix. screens (transennae) formed tiles sgraffito decoration balustrade of 1189. depict, on left, jeremiah , habakkuk; eternal father , blessed virgin; angel , saint john evangelist; , saint cyriacus; and, on right, figures of animals: 2 cranes on pomegranate tree, eagle, 2 peacocks on tree , 2 gryphons. in crypt of tears below, rebuilt after devastation of world war ii, remains of ancient structures. presbytery s arms house, in northern aisles, sepulchre of blessed girolamo ginelli (d. 1506), made in 1509 giovanni dalmata.


the northern transept houses madonna chapel, lavishly decorated niche designed luigi vanvitelli in 1739, site of venerated 17th century image of madonna. under chapel crypt remains of saint cyriacus of ancona (in marble case), saints liberius , marcellinus (in sicilian jasper) , ashes of saint palatia. urns bronze festoons designed , executed between 1757 , 1760 gioacchino varlè.
