biography
early life
johann gramp born on 28 august 1819 in eichigt near kulmbach in bavaria, father landowner. in 1837, left hamburg migrate australia. journey took 4 months, sailing on solway via rio de janeiro , cape of hope. arrived in kingscote on kangaroo island on 16 october 1837.
career
from 1837 1839, worked south australian company on kangaroo island. 1839 1840, worked same company, in port adelaide, suburb of adelaide. shortly after, worked in bakery in adelaide.
he started new life farmer in yatala. in 1847, moved barossa valley in rural south australia , settled near jacob s creek. same year, planted first vine there. 3 years later, in 1850, produced octave of wine, hock later known carte blanche. later, purchased more land expand vineyard , added cellar estate.
after ten years of living in barossa valley, elected serve on barossa east district council in 1860s, serving chairman. while serving on council, proponent of building state school in rowland flat local children. became naturalized australian citizen in 1872.
later grew citrus fruits in barossa valley.
personal life
he married eleonora (nitzschke) gramp. had 3 sons , 3 daughters. lutheran.
death , legacy
he died on 9 august 1903 @ estate in barossa valley. son gustav gramp took on vineyard, until inherited grandson, hugo gramp. stayed in gramp family until 1970s, when purchased reckitt , colman, , pernod ricard.
