the jasdf maintains integrated network of radar installations , air defense direction centers throughout country known basic air defense ground environment. in late 1980s, system modernized , augmented e-2c hawkeye airborne warning aircraft. nation relies on fighter-interceptor aircraft , surface-to-air missiles intercept hostile aircraft. both of these systems improved beginning of late 1980s. outmoded aircraft replaced in 1990s more sophisticated models, , nike-j missiles have been replaced modern patriot pac-2 , pac-3 system. jasdf provides air support ground , sea operations of jgsdf , jmsdf , air defense bases of forces. base defenses upgraded in late 1980s new surface-to-air missiles, modern antiaircraft artillery , new fixed , mobile aircraft shelters.
