the flagship campus of university of campinas located in district of barão geraldo, 12 kilometres (7.5 mi) center of campinas. occupies area of 350 hectares (860 acres) situated in valley surrounded gentle rolling hills , bounded on west urban area of barão geraldo, on south , east farmland , north lake , new industrial park built in 2000s.

design

the campus has unique design, main library, student service buildings , restaurant in central circular plaza, , of academic buildings located in blocks emanating center in radial fashion. different areas of study grouped in larger sections, neighboring other areas share similarities: philosophy buildings mark frontier between human sciences, mathematics , economics, while school of food engineering bordered chemical engineering , biology buildings. architect responsible overall design of campus joão carlos bross.

streets named after significant contributors each field, including elis regina , carlos gomes streets, brazilian singer , composer, respectively, alan turing avenue , others.

history

the area occupied campus part of larger rio das pedras farm, owned prominent almeida prado family. set new campus, zeferino vaz looking large, flat area in outskirts of city, have freedom design campus , surroundings scratch. interested in developing area of farm around barão geraldo, family donated initial area of 110 hectares (270 acres) university. remainder of farmland zoned , developed multiple neighborhoods, main historical farmhouse , surroundings remain, protected heritage site , natural reserve.

construction started in 1966, general castello branco, first president of brazil s military regime, laying cornerstone of institute of biology, inaugurated in 1968, , classes started in new campus on following year. in 1971 area of campus expanded 130 hectares (320 acres), more doubling size, accommodate move of school of medical sciences, until located across several buildings in campinas, new campus. expansion saw construction of massive public hospital, hospital das clínicas (hc), began serving public in 1979.

while initial construction considered complete 1978, campus has grown through continuous addition of new buildings , institutes. in 2014, after years of negotiation, university decided buy argentina farm, located on east side of campus, increasing total area 60% 350 hectares (860 acres). purchase allow expansion of medical sciences , athletics areas, new laboratories.

medical center

unicamp s main campus houses school of medical sciences teaching hospital, hospital das clinicas. construction started in 1975 , hospital opened first clinics , patient facilities in 1979, operational in 1985, when school of medical sciences transferred campinas maternity new campus.

the hospital has 1,000 beds, , serves half million people every year through brazil s unified public health system, sus, performing on average 40 surgeries , 13 births every day. in 2000s, hospital changed primary , secondary care specialized tertiary care center, receiving complex cases other hospitals , clinics in region, around 60% of patients in hospital still cases handled local health centers.

the hospital directly employs 3,100 people, , serves practice center university s faculty , training , residency center students of medicine, nursery , speech therapy.

the national synchrotron light laboratory


synchrotron lab

while not part of unicamp, national synchrotron light laboratory (lnls) research institution focused on physics, structural biology , nanotechnology maintains close ties university , operated part of national center research in energy , materials (cnpem). laboratory designed in 1983 , began operating in 1997, located next main campus. lnls has latin america s particle accelerator, synchrotron, used synchrotron light source designed , built in brazil various physical, chemical, geological, , biological studies.
