shortly after entering west virginia , crossing ohio river, 33 turns south, joining interstate 77 ripley. route turns east i-77, joining 119 @ spencer, passing through extremely rural areas of roane, calhoun, gilmer, , lewis counties.

us 33 intersects interstate 79 @ weston, west virginia. interstate 79 east, 33 four-lane highway, part of corridor h of appalachian development highway system. four-lane segment continues on through rural areas of upshur, , randolph counties, couple miles past elkins.

at harding, 250 joins 33 several miles after elkins, 33 joins sr 55 , returns two-lane road, except seven-mile (11 km) section of four-lane across kelly mountain between canfield , bowden. passing through monongahela national forest, 33 crosses eastern continental divide between harman , onego @ 3,240 feet (990 m) elevation, entering pendleton county, descends allegheny front along seneca creek, skirting north end of spruce mountain, @ 4,861 feet (1,482 m) highest point of allegheny mountains.
