a gaumont kalee projector 1930s


1911

the electric palace opened single projector, kalee. after gaumont machine provided standby. in days films short , not necessary use 2 machines allow feature-length films shown.


1927

a second gaumont installed replacing kalee. time 2 projectors being used allow feature-length films screened without break.


1930

sound-on-disc playback equipment syntok talking films ltd. installed allow vitaphone films screened. first talking picture shown warner brothers singing fool , starring al jolson, screened on 10 march 1930.


1931

the syntok equipment had proved unsatisfactory, both unreliable , had poor sound quality. consequently, replaced new western electric sound-on-film sound system. consisted of standard western electric soundheads western electric 4a amplifier system. 4a smallest of western electric cinema amplifier systems available @ time , intended small cinemas. 2 western electric 12a full-range horn loudspeakers employed, hung substantial wooden structure behind screen. high efficiency of these speakers made of limited output power (about 5 watts) of 4a amplifier system. @ same time 2 gaumont projectors replaced new kalee model 7 machines.


1956

the cinema closed. projection equipment left fate in abandoned cinema.


1972

when cinema discovered in 1972 projection room equipment found have been wrecked combination of theft, vandalism , corrosion. when restoration began left of stripped-out , disposed of.


1981

as part of restoration of cinema kalee dragon projectors installed. these came admiralty cinema, whitehall churchill used watch rushes of war newsreels. lamps vulcan arcs regent cinema in nearby dovercourt. sound system driven kalee model 522 valve amplifier. equipment used @ re-opening of cinema on 29 november 1981.


1985

kalee 20s , peerless carbon arcs installed replacing kalee dragons. projectors came odeon cinema in clacton in essex , peerless carbon arcs came regal cinema in stowmarket, suffolk. kalee valve amplifier replaced diy stereo sound system consisted of 2 mono dolby cinema systems (dolby 364 e2 equaliser) came abc cinema in ipswich suffolk, quad 606 amplifiers , celestion sr1/sr2 loudspeakers.


1998

with of arts council of england lottery grant projection system refurbished. xenon arc bulbs replaced carbon arcs , new rectifiers fitted. new sound system based around dolby cp500 processor installed. can play films mono or dolby stereo analogue soundtracks 5.1 dolby digital soundtrack. reel arms extended take 6000 foot reels , inverters installed drive motors. new isco wide screen , anamorphic lenses installed. sanyo plc-xf12b multimedia projector provided use computer or showing dvds or blu-ray discs.


2011

digital projection equipment comprising christie cp2220 digital projector , doremi dcp-2k4 server installed. can project full hd 1080p
