cinnabar occurs vein-filling mineral associated recent volcanic activity , alkaline hot springs. cinnabar deposited epithermal ascending aqueous solutions (those near surface , not hot) far removed igneous source. associated native mercury, stibnite, realgar, pyrite, marcasite, opal, quartz, chalcedony, dolomite, calcite , barite.


cinnabar found in mineral extraction localities yield mercury, notably almadén (spain); puerto princesa (philippines); new almaden (california); hastings mine , st. john s mine, vallejo, california; idrija (slovenia); new idria (california); giza, egypt; moschellandsberg (de) near obermoschel in palatinate; la ripa, @ foot of apuan alps , in mount amiata (both in tuscany); mountain avala (serbia); huancavelica (peru); murfreesboro, arkansas; terlingua, texas (united states); , province of guizhou in china, fine crystals have been obtained. mined near red devil, alaska on middle kuskokwim river. red devil named after red devil cinnabar mine, primary source of mercury. has been found in dominica near sulfur springs @ southern end of island along west coast.
