nationalism grew influence in 20th-century wales. @ various times both labour party , liberal party took cause of welsh home rule, or devolution. establishment of plaid cymru (the party of wales) in 1925 welsh independence uk first advocated.


the labour party dominated politics in 1920s; suffered sharp setback in 1931, maintained hold on wales. leftists such aneurin bevan dominated party in wales rejected nationalism backward reactionary movement more favorable capitalism , not socialism. instead wanted strong government in london reshape entire state economy.


the election of labour government in 1997 included commitment hold referendum on establishment of welsh assembly. referendum narrowly won, plaid cymru, liberal democrats , of welsh civic society supporting labour government s proposals.
