manchester united

born in lurgan, county armagh, sloan played local side glenavon youth, signed manchester united in september 1937 aged 17 years old. featured in team helping them win manchester league title in 1938/39. however, although managed break through reserves on handful of occasions, failed break united first team , on 24 may 1939, @ age of 19, transferred tranmere rovers fee of £500. during second world war, sloan return united guest player. between 1943 , 1945, made 3 wartime league appearances , scored 1 goal united. in may 1945, sloan played united in both legs of league north cup final against bolton wanderers. however, united lost final 3–2 on aggregate.


second world war

after signing tranmere rovers, sloan made debut club against rotherham united on 26 august 1939. however, shortly afterwards, second world war broke out , sloan joined raf. subsequently stationed in canada, became sergeant-pilot. throughout war, sloan remained tranmere rovers player , between 1939 , 1946, made 22 wartime league appearances , scored 15 goals club.


however, sloan s raf duties took him on country , during course of war, made frequent guest appearances other clubs. made 1 league appearance millwall during 1942–43 season, before guesting manchester united. 1944–45 season saw him make 11 league appearances , score 6 goals fulham. during same season, played regularly bath city , 18 goals helped them win league west cup in 1945. during 1945–46 season, made 6 league appearances , scored 4 goals brentford in football league south , went germany on tour club. had been without consent of parent club, tranmere rovers.


arsenal

at end of second world war, tranmere rovers expecting sloan return them. however, wartime guest appearances had attracted interest of several clubs including manchester united, former club, , arsenal. sloan walked out on tranmere and, in may 1946, signed latter club. made league debut arsenal on 31 august in 6–1 defeat against wolverhampton wanderers. during subsequent 1946–47 season, made 27 league appearances , scored 1 goal, establishing himself regular in arsenal team. played further 3 games club in fa cup. however, in following season, 1947–48, sloan lost place archie macaulay , made 3 league appearances arsenal went on win old first division in 1947-48 without him. played last game arsenal in league game against portsmouth on 4 october 1947. in february 1948, sloan left arsenal , signed sheffield united.


italy

after brief spell sheffield united, sloan joined milan 1948–49 season, , result became first irish footballer play in serie a. playing in team included gunnar nordahl , albert gudmundsson, sloan went on score 9 goals during season. first of these came on 24 october 1948, when scored third goal in 3–1 home win against triestina. on 5 june 1949, in final game of season, scored twice in 3–2 win against sampdoria. goals helped milan finish season in third place behind torino , internazionale. during subsequent seasons, played torino, udinese , brescia, before returning england , signing norwich city in december 1951.
