after serving spell in armentières sector of western front, fulton led nzrb in first major engagement of war, battle of flers-courcelette. took place in mid-september 1916 during somme offensive, , portion of battle, 2 battalions of 1st infantry brigade came under fulton s command. wounded during battle, invested companion of order of st michael , st george leadership.


fulton led nzrb during successful battle of messines in june 1917, took ill after battle , hospitalised several days. shortly after return front lines in late july, appointed commander of 4th new zealand infantry brigade reserve camp, better known sling camp, three-month period. in absence, nzrb participated in battle of passchendaele in october. morale low because of loss of 2 successive commanders, , lacking in preparation latter battle having been employed during previous month in laying cables , constructing banking, brigade s losses during passchendaele significant. fulton returned brigade in november, , despite time away, awarded croix de guerre in december 1917. had been mentioned in despatches twice during year.

in february 1918, having been in front line 4 months, brigade entered period of rest , training during fulton took leave. returned western front in late march 1918, , resumed command of nzrb on 27 march 1918. day after arrival, headquarters @ colincamps hit artillery barrage injured fulton , killed several of staff. died of wounds following day , buried @ doullens military cemetery. although stern , strict disciplinarian, fulton respected soldiers of command. last of 3 brigadier-generals killed while serving nzef during war. survived wife of 13 years nurse @ new zealand general hospital @ brockenhurst in england @ time of death. couple had no children.
