gartrell born in goldsithney, cornwall on december 1, 1846, son of ?? , elizabeth ( – 1 august 1895) , left parents south australia in ship john murray, arriving in 1848. father first worked @ burra copper mines, after 3 years moved adelaide. did not survive long, dying around 1853. james educated @ thomas burgan s school in gilles street, , @ age of 16 entered law office of (later justice) w. a. wearing, left after 3 years , in 1866 began working gilbert wood chief clerk, working 7 a.m. till 10 p.m. became partner in business, on equal terms proprietor s son, , managed, gilbert wood son peter wood), huge wholesale grocery business, connections throughout australia.

he many years been generous supporter , trustee of kent town methodist church. around 1913 church founded new church @ rose park, , gartrell paid pipe organ , contributed generously building, named gartrell memorial church in honour.
he supporter of minda home, royal institution blind, children s hospital, adelaide benevolent , strangers friend society.
he active member of adelaide chamber of commerce, , president in 1900–1901 , 1905–1908. treasurer of methodist ladies college, member of committee of prince alfred college, vice-president of royal institution blind, , president of adelaide benevolent , strangers friend society. took active interest in memorial hospital.

he married sarah noble lawrence (ca.1856 – 8 march 1935); lived @ fernilee , greenhill road, burnside.
