fox attended beverly hills high school, , played tennis school.
in 1960, won national collegiate athletics association (ncaa) doubles title larry nagler university of california @ los angeles (ucla). in 1961, team captain, fox won ncaa singles title. lost twice in dual match play while in college, rafael osuna , chuck mckinley. named all-american in 1959, 1960, , 1961, , named all-ucla , all-university of california athlete of year. fox helped lead ucla ncaa team championships in 1960 , 1961. graduated ucla b.a. in physics in 1961, , later earned ph.d. there in psychology.
when graduated, fox 4th-ranked singles player in united states. won singles title @ cincinnati in 1961. won 1962 national hard court title. year, reached singles final in cincinnati, falling marty riessen. in 1965 reached quarterfinals @ wimbledon.
in 1966, won canadian nationals , (40th annual) mercedes-benz cup, formerly known pacific southwest championships, graduate student, beating then-current champions of 4 major slams – manuel santana,wimbledon, fred stolle,us, tony roche,french, , roy emerson,australian, in finals.

fox jewish. won gold medal @ 1965 maccabiah games. 4 years later, @ 1969 maccabiah games top seed, , again won gold medal.
davis cup
he named u.s. davis cup team in 1961, 1962, , 1966. played 2 singles matches, winning both of them without giving more 2 games in of 6 sets played.
halls of fame
fox elected intercollegiate tennis association hall of fame player , coach in 1988. in 1991, inducted southern california jewish sports hall of fame.
he inducted southern california tennis association hall of fame in 2002. fox inducted ucla athletics hall of fame in 2005.
coaching
fox coached pepperdine university men’s tennis team, @ highest level-division 1, 17 years. teams, included brad gilbert, reached ncaa finals twice, semifinals 3 times, , quarterfinals 6 times. in career, coached teams 368–108 won-lost record between 1979 , 1995; .778 winning percentage best in pepperdine tennis history. named intercollegiate tennis coaches hall of fame and, aside gilbert, coached players such robbie weiss (ncaa singles winner), kelly jones (ncaa doubles winner , world no. 1 doubles player), , martin laurendeau (captain of canadian davis cup team).
