in 1843, bishop matthias loras of diocese of dubuque, iowa, had been visiting philadelphia, invited sisters come teach in iowa territory. pioneer bvms, nineteen in number, moved dubuque, iowa. opened new boarding school, st. mary’s female academy, predecessor of st. raphael cathedral school. first women religious in territory , open many additional schools.


during first years in iowa, building used school, sacred heart. in 1859, building again saw new life when st. joseph prairie boarding school moved site. during these years, number of towns @ there schools continued grow. important era of growth began in 1867 when jesuit priest arnold damen invited sisters open school @ holy family in chicago. sisters of charity, bvm opened number of schools throughout city, including st. mary’s , immaculata high schools.
