jewell hopes integrate mission of lmu, african american studies discipline, , issues of african americans in los angeles area. has many goals in mind department; these include adding new faculty, new courses, updating website, making changes core curriculum, strengthening relationships within other departments, presenting resources students, , research opportunities. jewell envisions changes in department can take place support of faculty, students, , alumni.

during fall of 2008, jewell teaches course on sociology of black community (afam 335).
