with close season in work out future, alan durban turned old club shrewsbury town , paid £60,000 midfielder sammy irvine , paid £50,000 manchester city s experienced defender mike doyle. 1978–79 season started stoke winning 5 of first 6 matches. paul randall arrived bristol rovers stoke maintained form. out of top 3 neither promotion rivals brighton & hove albion, crystal palace , sunderland. meant race promotion went way final day of season , stoke knew had win last league match away @ notts county gain return first division. backed on 14,000 fans, stoke came out victorious albeit late on, paul richardson s header 2 minutes time deciding match , earned stoke 3rd spot in table, finishing point above sunderland.


fa cup

stoke suffered misfortune in season s fa cup when, having taken 2–0 lead in third round tie @ home oldham athletic, heavy blizzard caused match abandoned. in rematch oldham claimed 1–0 victory.


league cup

stoke had useful run beating sunderland, northampton town , charlton athletic away before losing 3–1 watford @ quarter final stage.
