improve network capacity
the primary aim of project increase capacity within inner core of metropolitan network, improving reliability , efficiency when linking 2 of melbourne s busiest train lines, sunbury , cranbourne/pakenham lines. estimated once complete, project allow additional 20,000 passengers during peak periods , provide additional points of interchange existing light , heavy rail transport.
relieve swanston street tram services
with proposed route expected run directly under swanston street , towards south-eastern suburbs, project provide needed relief existing , overcrowded tram services run st kilda road cbd. currently, st kilda road busiest tram thoroughfare in world, 10 tram routes running cbd via swanston street. melbourne metro expected relieve pressure allowing commuters catch train domain interchange , cbd either north-west or south-eastern suburbs, avoiding congested tram routes. in particular, many of existing tram routes run through st kilda road terminate @ melbourne university, more accessible nearby parkville station when melbourne metro complete.
allow further network expansion
in 2012, public transport victoria, body charged planning , coordination of public transport services in victoria, released metropolitan network development plan. emphasised need project precursor other heavy rail expansion projects, given current limitations on existing inner city infrastructure cope additional services running inner part of network. in particular rail lines doncaster, melbourne airport , rowville require additional inner core capacity enable services run on lines cbd.
