the clock of moscow kremlin rings in 2012. melody heard before striking played alone once on first quarter hour, twice on half-hour, , 3 times on third quarter hour. phrase played 4 times on full hour, followed strikes. after strikes, additional tune played; short phrase national anthem.


in 1941, performance of internationale, special electromechanical drive installed , later dismantled. in 1944, @ direction of joseph stalin, unsuccessful attempts made reset clock play new national anthem of soviet union.


major restoration of chimes , entire clock mechanism carried out in 1974. mechanism stopped 100 days, disassembled, , restored, replacing old parts. however, mechanism of musical bells remained unrestored.


in 1991 plenum of central committee decided resume work on kremlin chimes, turned out 3 bells short of needed soviet national anthem. problem arose again in 1995. patriotic song mikhail glinka adopted new national anthem. in 1996, during inauguration of boris yeltsin, kremlin clock played tune once more, after 58 years of silence. in absence of few bells needed perform national anthem, metal beats installed in addition bells. @ noon , midnight, chimes played patriotic song , while @ every 3 hours, played melody of chorus glory, glory you, holy rus ! opera life tsar (also glinka). last major restoration carried out in 1999 after 6 months planning. hands , numbers re-gilded. instead of patriotic song , chimes played new national anthem of russia had been approved in 2000.
