on 3 may 1866, after several days of successful testing, karl flach, son, , 9 other chilean , german crewmen boarded submarine test run. during test, submarine sank unknown reasons; thought lie @ depth of 50 meters (164 feet) within bay of valparaiso. flach located 2 days after sinking seamen english frigate hms leander, , diver named john wallace able see , draw wreck, buried nose-down in bay s sediment. according contemporary sources, attempt raise submarine failed because of burial.


present location

the chilean navy, support others, has searched submarine , intends raise after finding it, though there yet no agreement on remains of eleven bodies thought inside. finding of object appears flach reported in el mercurio de valparaiso on 25 april 2007. however, finding has not been confirmed, because, of august 2007, sediment still has cleared away object.
