mahadeva born on 5 october 1885 in matara in southern ceylon. son of p. arunachalam, leading civil servant, , sornambal. educated @ royal college, colombo won many prizes including turnour prize. after school joined christ s college, cambridge, graduating honours degree in mathematics.


mahadeva married sivakami, daughter of m. mootatamby, in 1918. had son (balakumar) , daughter (swarnam).
