History Markleeville, California
jacob j. marklee founded toll bridge crossing carson river in 1861. aimed tap traffic silver mining boom @ silver mountain city. on june 23, 1862, recorded land claim of 160 acres in douglas county, nevada. boundary survey took place, , property ended being in california. in 1863, marklee died after being involved in gunfight. when comstock lode discovery took place, town of markleeville founded on marklee property. today, alpine county courthouse sits on former property, listed california historical landmark.
a post office opened in markleeville in 1863.
