a prominent feature of synagogue renaissance-style ark (containing torah scrolls) located @ centre of eastern wall of building. resembles in design reredos of churches of same period. painted though made of coloured italian marble, in fact made entirely of oak.
seven hanging brass candelabra symbolise 7 days of week, largest of – hanging in centre of synagogue – represents sabbath. central candelabrum donated community of great synagogue of amsterdam. candles still lit today weddings , jewish festivals. rest of year synagogue lit electric lights added in 1928. ner tamid (sanctuary lamp) of silver , dates 1876.
twelve pillars, symbolising twelve tribes of israel, support women s gallery.
the synagogue contains benches running parallel side walls , facing inward, leaving 2 aisles procession torah scrolls. in addition, backless benches @ rear of synagogue, taken original synagogue @ creechurch lane, date 1657 , still regularly used.
