in april , may 1918, peyton nominally commanded fifth army, had been defeated on somme in march 1918 , renamed fourth army, there no fifth army, , command reserve hq @ cécy-en-ponthieu. on 23 may, fifth army reconstituted , given sir william birdwood, , 6 weeks (as temporary lieutenant general) peyton took command of x corps, corps held fighting. however, 3 july 1918 until march 1919 returned active service commander of 40th infantry division during operations in france , flanders, leading through hundred days advance through flanders.

peyton next returned india, command united province district , 3rd indian division @ meerut between 1920 , 1922. promoted substantive lieutenant general in 1921.


peyton next posted military secretary secretary of state war, 1922 1926 , commander-in-chief of scottish command, 1926 1930. last post before retirement in 1930; had been promoted general in 1927.


a member of army , navy club, died there on 14 november 1931. buried in brompton cemetery, london north-west of chapel.


he unusually tall, height of 6 feet, 6 inches.
