fifty-four-year-old sitting mp cathcart wason chose fight seat again, standing independent liberal. had hoped stand official liberal candidate, local liberal association chose not him. although born in scotland moved new zealand , had served independent member of parliament there. returned britain in 1900 in time general election stand liberal unionist. father, rigby wason had sat whig mp , older brother eugene wason @ time liberal party mp in scotland.
the local liberal unionist association considered several candidates, including captain john nicholson, native of shetland had contested chester-le-street conservative in 1900 general election. selected 59-year-old theodore angier candidate defend seat. had no connection islands. member of liberal unionist council. had been sailor. owned family steamship business. had volunteered service in south african war. standing parliament first time.
in august 1902, local liberal association had selected 47-year-old thomas mckinnon wood prospective candidate re-gain seat. although born in stepney, father had been born in orkney farmer. wood member of london county council central hackney 1892 , 1897 leader of progressive party , served chairman of council 1898 1899. wood stood unsuccessfully parliamentary candidate east islington in 1895 , glasgow st. rollox in 1900.
