at porthmadog, original line came via streets , across britannia bridge 1836 terminus @ northernmost end of welsh slate company s wharf fr officially started. second datum point pre-1954 mileage calculations. (the first being in blaenau ffestiniog). line on bridge connected gorseddau , croesor tramways , later used welsh highland railway passenger trains 1923 1936. line on bridge last used in 1958 , dismantled. reopened part of whr in 2011.


the cob

between porthmadog harbour station , boston lodge, railway runs on cob, dyke of traeth mawr polder . cob built between 1807 , 1811 william madocks and, in addition land reclamation function in conjunction sluice gates @ britannia bridge, serves roadway (which, since 1836, has been @ lower level on landward side) , bridge across afon glaslyn. tolls charged tollgate @ boston lodge until 2003, when rights purchased national assembly wales. higher, original, section of cob carries, in addition railway, public footpath throughout virtually entire length. there no fencing between footpath , railway, because railway not own top of cob, uses wayleave under act of 1821.
