the group moving hearts formed in 1981 when 2 members of planxty, dónal lunny (bouzouki) , christy moore (vocals, guitar , bodhrán), decided explore possibilities of linking contemporary music irish traditional music. intended form trio guitarist declan sinnott, expanded group include irish musicians keith donald (alto sax), eoghan o neill (bass), brian calnan (drums), , davy spillane (uilleann pipes).

after several changes of personnel , recording of 3 albums, moving hearts (1981), dark end of street (1982) , live hearts (1983), moving hearts performed instrumental group, recording album storm (1985) new line-up consisting of: spillane , masterson (uilleann pipes), lunny (bouzouki, synthesiser & bodhrán), donald (sax), noel eccles (percussion), matt kelleghan (drums), o neill (bass) , greg boland (guitar). group ceased touring in 1984, appearing @ occasional festivals preseli folk festival—now fishguard folk festival—in 1986. performed sold out, farewell concert @ dublin s point theatre in 1990, flo mcsweeney on vocals.

in winter of 1984, andy irvine gathered collection of musicians throughout europe , formed mosaic, final line-up including irvine himself, lunny, masterson, danish lissa ladefoged (bass , vocals), dutch hans theessink (guitar , vocals), , hungarian singer márta sebestyén muzsikás.

they performed in budapest on 12 july 1985, followed further 2 gigs in hungary , appearance @ dranouter festival in belgium in august, prior english tour. seventh gig billed @ southport arts center, chris hardwick of folk roots reviewed words: every once in while folk scene throws new permutation in exceptionally gifted individuals come produce innovative , exhilarating goes way beyond sum of parts . however, band lasted 1 summer.

masterson, along bill whelan, joined patrick street in time record album irish times (1990).

riverdance

in 1994, masterson teamed whelan again , joined riverdance. remained show on , off entire duration, playing uilleann pipes, low whistle, tin whistle, kaval , bouzouki, taking on duties of musical director.

he recorded 5 solo albums: end of harvest (1990), tropical trad (1993), fairwater fionnuisce (1996), drifting through hazel woods (1996) , heartland (2005). wrote , arranged music scores film, tv , theatre, , piping featured on soundtrack of films irish rm (1983-1985), eat peach (1986), secret of roan inish (1994) , mother s son (1996). participated in many recordings, wide range of musicians (see selected discography).
