the entrance portland high school.


established in 1821 boys school, portland high school claims oldest public high school still operating in united states; 15th oldest public high school in u.s. joseph libbey first principal. separate school girls added in 1850, , in 1863 school moved cumberland avenue, present location. original school building on site, middle wing of modern school, divided 2 brick wall running top bottom of building divide girls boys. of wall has been removed, remains can still seen in basement. school added national register of historic places on november 23, 1984.


in 1989 new annex opened containing more classrooms, cafeteria, theater/auditorium (named john ford) , athletic facility.


approximately 1000 students enrolled each year. in june 2010, 174 students graduated portland high school.
