the laohu valley reserve known breed south china tigers (panthera tigris amoyensis). @ end of 2015, there 20 wild individuals living in reserve, representing 20% of world s population of critically endangered subspecies. 2 cubs among individuals. however, in february 2016, 1 of 2 south china tiger cubs born in late 2015 died, leaving 19 south china tigers in reserve. @ point in year, south china tigers made quick recovery birth of 6 healthy cubs @ laohu valley reserve, of confirmed males. 3 cubs born madonna: hunter, ivan, , jay. 2 cubs cathay: felix , gilbert. , 1 cub princess known k, although cub s gender has yet determined.


other tigers, predators such wildcats (felis silvestris), caracals (caracal caracal), bat-eared foxes (otocyon megalotis megalotis) , black-backed jackals (canis mesomelas), , herbivorous mammals such plains zebras (equus quagga), live within reserve too. home birds such crested guineafowl (guttera pucherani), egyptian geese (alopochen aegyptiaca) , south african ostriches (struthio camelus australis).


the prey menus of tiger , lion similar. south china tigers prey on blesboks (damaliscus pygargus phillipsi), springboks (taurotragus oryx), gemsboks (oryx gazella), black wildebeest (connochaetes gnou), blue wildebeest (connochaetes taurinus), common elands (taurotragus oryx), impalas (aepyceros melampus), waterbucks (kobus ellipsiprymnus), common warthogs (phacochoerus africanus) , cape hares (lepus capensis).


in 2013, in partnership endangered wildlife trust (ewt), 2 male south african cheetahs (acinonyx jubatus jubatus) relocated being taken amakhala game reserve , released laohu valley reserve. noted first time wild cheetahs have been reintroduced free state after hundred years of regional extinction. in 2016, adult female south african cheetah introduced reserve. 3 wild cheetah cubs born in laohu valley reserve in february 2017, first cheetahs born in wild in free state since disappearance province on century ago.
