Properties and structure Cinnabar
crystal structure of cinnabar: yellow = sulfur, grey = mercury, green = cell
structurally, cinnabar belongs trigonal crystal system. occurs thick tabular or slender prismatic crystals or granular massive incrustations. crystal twinning occurs simple contact twins.
note, mercury(ii) sulfide, hgs, adopts cinnabar structure described, , 1 additional structure, i.e. dimorphous. cinnabar more stable form, , structure akin of hgo: each hg center has 2 short hg-s bonds (each 2.36 Å), , 4 longer hg•••s contacts (with 3.10, 3.10, 3.30, , 3.30 Å separations). in addition, hgs found in black, non-cinnabar polymorph (metacinnabar) has zincblende structure.
