there have been multiple professional , amateur stage adaptations of hitchhiker s guide galaxy. there 3 professional productions, staged in 1979 , 1980.


the first of these performed @ institute of contemporary arts in london, between 1 , 19 may 1979, starring chris langham arthur dent (langham later returned hitchhiker s prak in final episode of 2004 s tertiary phase) , richard hope ford prefect. show adapted first series scripts , directed ken campbell, went on perform character in final episode of second radio series. show ran 90 minutes, had audience limited eighty people per night. actors performed on variety of ledges , platforms, , audience pushed around in hovercar, 1/2000th of inch above floor. first time zaphod represented having 2 actors in 1 large costume. narration of book split between 2 usherettes, adaptation has appeared in no other version of h2g2. 1 of these usherettes, cindy oswin, went on voice trillian lp adaptation.


the second stage show performed throughout wales between 15 january , 23 february 1980. production of clwyd theatr cymru, , directed jonathan petherbridge. company performed adaptations of complete radio episodes, @ times doing 2 episodes in night, , @ other times doing 6 episodes of first series in single three-hour sessions. adaptation performed again @ oxford playhouse in december 1981,the bristol hippodrome, plymouth s theatre royal in may–june 1982, , @ belgrade theatre, coventry, in july 1983.


the third , least successful stage show held @ rainbow theatre in london, in july 1980. second production directed ken campbell. rainbow theatre had been adapted stagings of rock operas in 1970s, , both reference books mentioned in footnotes indicate this, coupled incidental music throughout performance, caused reviewers label musical . first adaptation adams wrote dish of day sequence. production ran on 3 hours, , panned this, music, laser effects, , acting. despite attempts shorten script, , make other changes, closed 3 or 4 weeks (accounts differ), , lost lot of money. despite bad reviews, there @ least 2 stand-out performances: michael cule , david learner both went on production appearances in tv adaptation.


in december 2011 new stage production announced begin touring in june 2012. included members of original radio , tv casts such simon jones, geoff mcgivern, susan sheridan, mark wing-davey , stephen moore vip guests playing role of book. produced in form of radio show downloaded when tour completed. production based on first 4 fits in first act, second act covering material rest of series. show featured band, performed songs share , enjoy , krikkit song under ink black sky , marvin s song how hate night , , marvin , minor hit in 1981.
