giuseppe ottavio allamano born in asti in 1851 fourth of 5 children joseph , marianna cafasso allamano. mother younger sister of saint joseph cafasso. father died of anthrax when giuseppe three.


from 1861 1866 allamano attended oratory of john bosco in valdocco. commenced studies become priest in turin in november 1866, , ordained priesthood on 20 september 1873. appointed spiritual director @ major seminary of diocese of turin. in 1876 obtained doctorate in theology. appointed rector of santuario della consolata on 2 october 1880 , maintained position until death. between 1883 , 1885 restructured sanctuary , repaired roof. in 1899 commissioned architect carlo ceppi expand interior space faithful construction of 4 circular chapels. allamano ensured shrine became source of spiritual renewal.


allamano responded requests spiritual , material comfort of turin supporting various social initiatives , promoting catholic newspapers. in 1899 began publishing monthly la consolata.
