in may 1940, unit took part in battle of france part of xix army corps under command of guderian. division involved in fighting in belgium , mosel river valley. arrived in town of abbeville on 20th. later division formed armoured element flanked british expeditionary army , forced evacuation dunkirk. 2nd panzer division advanced along river aisne interior of france. @ end of campaign in last months of 1940, division lost 4th panzer regiment used basis soon-to-be-formed 13th panzer division.
