the ship laid down on 7 october 1914, launched on 8 december 1915 , entered service in may 1916, 3 weeks before battle of jutland. @ jutland fought part of 3rd battle cruiser squadron , came under withering fire german forces. hit 17 150mm shells , suffered 29 men killed , 49 wounded; many of wounded lost legs because open backed gun-shields did not reach deck , give adequate protection. amongst gun crew fatalities 16-year-old john jack cornwell received victoria cross dedication duty though mortally injured. chester served 3rd light cruiser squadron until armistice , subsequently placed in reserve. offered re-sale greece offer declined , ship sold scrapping on 9 november 1921 rees, of llanelly. gun served cornwell preserved in imperial war museum in london.
