the river liffey flowing through newbridge college in co. kildare


the liffey rises in liffey head bog between kippure , tonduff in wicklow mountains, forming many streamlets @ sally gap. flows 132 km (82 mi) through counties wicklow, kildare , dublin before entering irish sea @ mouth @ midpoint of dublin bay, on line extending baily lighthouse muglin rocks. crosses county wicklow county kildare @ poulaphouca , county kildare county dublin @ leixlip, of length being in kildare.


the catchment area of liffey 1,256 km (485 sq mi). long term average flow rate of river 18.0 m/s (640 cu ft/s).


tributaries

the liffey system includes dozens of smaller rivers , streams. tributaries include athdown brook, shankill river, ballylow brook, brittas river , woodend brook, substantial king s river.


downstream of poulaphouca lemonstown stream, kilcullen stream , pinkeen stream, followed painestown river (with tributaries including morell river), rye water (with tributaries including lyreen), , griffeen river.


within dublin various phoenix park streams on left bank, interspersed right bank tributaries such glenaulin stream , creosote stream.


within quays area tributaries include river camac, possibly colman s brook, bradoge river, river poddle, stein river , river dodder, of have numerous tributaries of own.


in earlier times, river tolka arguably tributary of liffey, or @ least shared mouth, enters dublin bay distinctly, distance north.

there dams 3 esb hydroelectric power stations along river, @ poulaphouca, golden falls , leixlip. major reservoir facilities exist @ poulaphouca. liffey not feature natural lakes, , has few islands.


significant falls @ poulaphouca , @ golden falls flooded reservoir construction. there remain areas of rapids, including river approaches dublin city.


settlements

towns along river include ballymore eustace, athgarvan, kilcullen, newbridge, caragh, clane, celbridge, leixlip , lucan before river reaches city of dublin approaches mouth.
