the radcliffe observatory
the college located on three-acre site on woodstock road in north oxford housed green college. centred on architecturally important radcliffe observatory, 18th-century, grade listed building building, modelled on ancient tower of winds in athens.
the observatory built @ suggestion of dr thomas hornsby, savilian professor of astronomy, after had used room in bodleian tower observe transit of venus across sun s disc in 1769. transit notable event helped produce improved measurements nautical navigation. built funds trustees of dr john radcliffe, considerable estate had financed new quadrangle old college (university college, oxford) radcliffe library (now radcliffe camera) , radcliffe infirmary.
building began in 1772 plans architect henry keene, observer s house design. upon keene s death in 1776, observatory completed different design james wyatt. wyatt based design on illustration of tower of winds in athens had appeared in stuart , revett s antiquities of athens, published in 1762.
atop observatory rests tower of winds. beneath tower 3 levels, rooms on each level. ground floor today used college dining room. first floor library, graduate common room. third floor octagonal observing room, empty except of original furniture.
the observatory functioning observatory 1773 until owners, radcliffe trustees, sold in 1934 lord nuffield, presented radcliffe hospital. in 1936, lord nuffield established nuffield institute medical research there. in 1979, nuffield institute relocated john radcliffe hospital , observatory taken on green college.
the norham gardens site
sir william osler.
a short walk green templeton s main buildings 13 norham gardens. in 1905 sir william osler appointed regius professorship of medicine @ oxford. in 1907, sir william acquired 13 norham gardens, 1 of finest houses in oxford @ time. during fourteen years of regius professorship, osler made norham gardens meeting place academics on world. became favourite of medical students, physicians, , scientists, receiving label of open arms warmth exuded.
after osler, 13 norham gardens occupied regius professor, sir george white pickering , after him, regius professor sir richard doll, last regius professor live there. property of 13 norham gardens acquired green college.
today, norham gardens houses osler-mcgovern centre. centre serves 2 functions. firstly, follows in sir william osler’s footsteps uniting scholars, lecturers , academics. centre promotes art , science of medicine through workshops, conferences, visiting scholars , post-doctoral fellows. secondly, 13 norham gardens home reuters institute study of journalism (risj), established in 2006, , based @ green templeton college.
housing
green templeton college has housing on main site , various annexes. on-site housing includes doll building (built in 1981) 30 student rooms, walton building 3 student rooms, observer s house 13 student rooms , new block 4 student rooms. furthermore, college has various student rooms in lord napier house (observatory street), 2- , 3-bedroomed terraced houses in observatory street, various student rooms on st margaret s road, 1- , 2-bedroom flats in rewley abbey court , 1- , 2-bedroom flats in norham gardens.
facilities
green templeton provides laundry facilities, lecture theatre (the abraham lecture theatre), seminar/presentation room (the barclay room), , computing room 6 windows computers. there 2 24-hour-access libraries on-campus: management library (management studies library) , medical/social science library (medical library). management studies library adjacent observer s house, , medical library adjacent radcliffe observatory. since august 2014, green templeton has on-site 171 square meter gym rowing machines, spinning bikes, threadmills , weights located between main site , observatory street.
future developments
in next phase of development, area north-east of college developed, allowing extension of college s academic departments , residential accommodation. furthermore, university of oxford redeveloping adjoining old radcliffe infirmary site, known radcliffe observatory quarter.
