cycling has been important sport in spain since 1940s. vuelta españa (spanish tour of spain ) 1 of important cycling events in world, tour de france (french tour of france ) , giro d italia (italian tour of italy ) stage races, collectively known grand tours.


several spanish cycling athletes have won tour de france, including federico bahamontes, luis ocaña, pedro delgado, Óscar pereiro, alberto contador, , carlos sastre. successful spanish cyclist miguel indurain. won tour de france in 5 consecutive years between 1991 , 1995. won giro d italia in 2 consecutive years (1992 , 1993), 1995 road world championship time trial , gold medal in 1996 olympic time trial.


more recently, in 2008, sastre became seventh , third consecutive spaniard win tour de france, followed contador winning second tour in 2009 s edition. contador thought have repeated win in 2010, day before stage 17, queen stage finishing atop col du tourmalet, contador tested positive performance-enhancing substance clenbuterol. although claimed result of consuming contaminated beef, in january 2012 court of arbitration sport ruled him guilty , gave him two-year ban backdated july 21, 2010, , had results achieved after july 21 erased, including victory in 2010 giro d italia , 5th-place finish , aggressive rider award stage 19 @ 2011 tour de france. since returning ban, contador has won vuelta twice, in 2012 , 2014.
