in aaaaaa , aaaaa, top 4 teams each district eligible playoffs. 2 eligible teams highest student enrollment district seeded in division playoff bracket, , remaining 2 teams (with lower enrollment) seeded in division ii playoff bracket. method supposed prevent matchups between large , small schools within classification, although in practice not case – example, in 2006 playoffs, southlake carroll (the class aaaaa division champion) had lower student enrollment cedar hill (the class aaaaa division ii champion).

for other 11-man classifications , six-man football, uil divides schools separate division (large) , division ii (small) districts @ bi-annual redistricting session (in these cases, there maximum of 16 districts statewide, opposed 32 in larger classifications); separate playoffs held each division top 4 teams (top 2 in six-man) each district eligible.

other major team sports

in aaaaaa , aaaaa, top 4 teams each district eligible. however, uil not use division i/division ii alignment in football; 1 champion crowned in each class. similar arrangement exists in aaaa, aaa, , aa, , class in other team sports except basketball, top 3 teams eligible.

for class basketball, similar six-man football setup uil divides schools separate division (large) , division ii (small) districts prior beginning of season, , separate playoffs held each division top 2 teams each district eligible. arrangement exists because, in small schools, basketball team sport in school participates.

for baseball , softball, @ levels except state tournament, playoff rounds best 2-of-3 if both coaches agree; if not coaches flip coin decide format of playoff (single game or 2 out of 3 series). @ state tournament both semifinals , finals single-game format.

advancement in these activities dependent on individual event involved.

musical competition

in musical competitions, schools aligned 33 regions (the regions set not uil, texas music educators association). schools of sizes grouped region.

advancement within musical competition not based on direct competition against other schools. instead, musicians compared against established rubric (this comparable conformation dog shows dogs compete against written standard breed, not against other dogs of differing breeds), , schools or individuals judged division 1 (the highest level) advance next level, except state competition.

for marching band, schools compete against other schools in same uil conference. 33 regions grouped 7 areas class 5a , 6a schools, , 5 areas class 1a, 2a, 3a, , 4a schools. schools of classes compete in region competition annually, fall semester activity. however, in even-numbered years schools in class 4a , class 6a can advance region area , state, , in odd-numbered years schools class 1a, 2a, 3a, , 5a can advance region area , state. in order bands advance region area, need overall division 1 @ least 2 region judges, whether 1-2-1, 2-1-1, 1-1-2, etc... bands advance area competition. in order make state, band needs make area final competition , make top 3-5 bands state. area , state winner school lowest ordinal score when rankings each judge tabulated. example, school 1 receives first place score 3 judges, second place score fourth judge, , fourth place score fifth judge. ordinal score school 1 9 (1+1+1+2+4). school 2 receives 2 first place scores , 3 second place scores. ordinal score school 2 8 (2+2+2+1+1). school 2 champion despite receiving fewer first place scores because school 2 s ordinal score lower school 1 s. thus, overall placement in caption area each judge more important raw score awarded judge.

in other musical competitions (held in spring semester), conference alignments disregarded except rules regarding sight reading. advancement in solo , small ensemble competition region state, , @ state top 2 soloists , top ensemble awarded medals. individual performers may given outstanding performer awards. however, advancement limited not division 1 winners, winners must have performed class 1 (difficult level) performances @ region, , performance must have been selection on uil s prescribed music list , performed memory (except instrumental pieces designated exempt such on list). in sight reading, schools in different conferences read different pieces, , second groups (officially called non-varsity groups) read different pieces other conferences varsity group.

sight reading , medium ensembles compete @ region level only. music theory held @ state , open , students in grades 9–12 having permission of school principal , school music director; student not required have advanced region in musical contest (or participated matter). wind ensembles can advance region state; however, state event not competition educational event.
