the island uninhabited there evidence of human occupation dating neolithic period. remains of field systems, church, cairn burial, gun battery , martello tower still exist. there 2 holy wells, 1 on western shoreline known locally scurvy , located within surrounding stone structure. there bullaun stone formed earthbound boulder. may have been used pagan alter christianised in 7th century carving christian cross on face. lies close remains of church. @ northern extreminity of island there evidence of deep ditch or fosse boundary of medieval promontary fort. located less 300 metres off mainland, island comprises 9 hectares (22 acres). bulloch harbour, possible visit island. regular ferry operates coliemore harbour irish: calach mor meaning big harbour , during summer months.
