Exterior Rivington Church
the church built of irregularly coursed sandstone large quoins, measuring 5 feet, @ corners , slate roof. small, plain building 3 three-light windows on each side. nave 55 feet 6 inches in length 27 feet 6 inches in width , chancel, 13 feet 6 inches 15 feet 6 inches. 19th-century gabled porch between centre , western windows on south side , modern vestry on north side. west gable wall has elliptical-headed doorway , octagonal bell turret has square base , conical roof weathervane. roof covered green slates , finished overhanging eaves. three-bay nave has square-headed windows of 3 square lights on north side, , round heads on south side. there doorway between second , third windows east on each side , door @ west end. chancel has 3 round-headed lights in each side , 5 light east window.
in graveyard, earliest gravestone marked 1616. earliest memorial in church dated 1627. stones near entrance include anderton stone depicts shack bolts anderton coat of arms , crucified figure inri believed originate anderton hall chapel. above carved sator square reading sator arepo tenet opera rotas possibly predates christian era.
