during world war service, veronica damaged in mediterranean sea 45 nautical miles (83 km) northwest of alexandria, egypt (31°43′n 29°17′e / 31.717°n 29.283°e / 31.717; 29.283), imperial german navy submarine sm ub-42 on 14 april 1917. veronica repaired , returned service.
new zealand service
veronica in new zealand division of royal navy 19 september 1920 24 february 1934, exercised cruisers, toured new zealand ports, took part in ceremonial occasions, , went on annual pacific island cruises. in conjunction sister ship laburnum similar, small differences came different commercial shipyards.
hawke s bay earthquake
veronica assisted survivors in aftermath of 1931 hawke s bay earthquake in new zealand. having berthed in port ahuriri 3 hours before earthquake, radioed auckland help, provided light cruisers dunedin , diomede. subsequently docked inspection possible bottom damage seabed had risen under her.
