born in tottenham, london, wright played essex outfit harwich & parkeston, 1932 had joined football league side charlton athletic. between 1932 , 1935, wright made 38 league appearances, despite being understudy sam bartram charlton rose third division first division.
during 1936–37 season, wright played 28 times aldershot finished bottom of football league. however, fee of £2,500 saw him move derby county following season, played 25 times.
in war years, wright played @ layer road, ground of future club colchester united alongside future manager ted fenton while playing eastern command side. having played southern league side chelmsford city, wright signed essex rivals colchester united on 11 july 1946. despite playing 23 times colchester, club decided not retain wright 1947–48 season, month later, change of heart saw wright re-sign. in second season, helped colchester reach fifth round of fa cup, within weeks of beginning of 1948–49 season, wright had suffered injury saw him lose place ken whitehead. attempted comeback on 23 april 1949 against merthyr tydfil ended due injury, meaning colchester forced play forward vic keeble in goal. final appearance club. made 69 appearances colchester in competitions.
