career

woods started professional career points win on dave proctor in home town of sheffield. after compiling record of 13–0 stepped in craig joseph , beat him on 10 rounds win central area super middleweight title. after series of victories, woods, record of 18–0, fought vacant commonwealth belt against mark baker, had record of 20–1. woods won fight , claimed belt 12 round points decision.


in next fight unbeaten woods found himself opposite former british champion david starie. fight ended in first defeat woods.


woods bounced starie defeat moving weight division light heavyweight , winning next 2 fights before landing shot @ fellow yorkshireman , current holder of british, commonwealth , european light-heavyweight titles crawford ashley. woods knocked out ashley in eighth round capture 3 belts.


he ended defending commonwealth , european titles twice each , adding wbc international light-heavyweight title résumé. latter victory being wbc strap, when woods set himself eliminator full wbc light heavyweight title. fight took place in sheffield, in september 2001. woods beat experienced italian–ugandan yawe davis in unanimous decision allow him attempt world title.

in next fight woods found himself in ibf title eliminator. 8 months after defeat johnson, woods took on australian jason delisle @ octagon centre in sheffield. won fight despite being put down in first round , set himself world title fight number 4. title vacant again , time woods found himself in ring undefeated american rico hoye. fight took place in rotherham , ended woods winning on technical knockout (t.k.o.) when referee stopped fight in fifth round.


in september 2005 @ hallam fm arena, sheffield, yorkshire, woods defeated mandatory challenger , former wbo , lineal champion julio cesar gonzalez via clear unanimous decision. successful voluntary defence against delisle followed, before woods fought jamaican glen johnson third time. in ninth round woods sustained heavy punishment head @ hands of johnson, fought win subsequent rounds. american judge, richard bays scored fight 115–112 in favour of woods, mickey vann scored contest 115–113 in favour of johnson , roberto ramírez 116–112 scored in favour of woods. split decision woods had defeated man beat him in 2004.


in september 2007, woods again defended ibf title against julio cesar gonzalez unanimous decision.

in april 2008 @ st. pete times forum, tampa, florida in united states, woods gave lacklustre display against american antonio tarver , lost ibf title. tarver out-boxed sheffield man on way comfortable points victory. following defeat, dejected woods hinted may quit sport. change of trainer followed, woods replacing richard poxon glyn rhodes. change seemed have paid off when on 14 february 2009 woods travelled channel island of jersey defeat kosovar-albanian fighter elvir muriqi in eliminator match old ibf title.
