Artificial transmission-line-media Negative-index metamaterial

in metamaterial literature, medium or media refers transmission medium or optical medium. in 2002 group of researchers came idea in contrast materials depended on resonant behavior, non-resonant phenomena surpass narrow bandwidth constraints of wire/split-ring resonator configuration. idea translated type of medium broader bandwidth abilities, negative refraction, backward waves, , focusing beyond diffraction limit.

they dispensed split-ring-resonators , instead used network of l–c loaded transmission lines. in metamaterial literature became known artificial transmission-line media. @ time had added advantage of being more compact unit made of wires , split ring resonators. network both scalable (from megahertz tens of gigahertz range) , tunable. includes method focusing wavelengths of interest.

by 2007 negative refractive index transmission line employed subwavelength focusing free-space flat lens. free-space lens significant advance. part of prior research efforts targeted creating lens did not need embedded in transmission line.
