disk electromagnetic brakes used on vehicles such trains, , power tools such circular saws, stop blade when power turned off. disk eddy current brake consists of conductive non-ferromagnetic metal disc (rotor) attached axle of vehicle s wheel, electromagnet located poles on each side of disk, magnetic field passes through disk. electromagnet allows braking force varied. when no current passed through electromagnet s winding, there no braking force. when driver steps on brake pedal, current passed through electromagnet windings, creating magnetic field, larger current in winding, larger eddy currents , stronger braking force. power tool brakes use permanent magnets, moved adjacent disk linkage when power turned off. kinetic energy of vehicle s motion dissipated in joule heating eddy currents passing through disk s resistance, conventional friction disk brakes, disk becomes hot. unlike in linear brake below, metal of disk passes repeatedly through magnetic field, disk eddy current brakes hotter linear eddy current brakes.
japanese shinkansen trains had employed circular eddy current brake system on trailer cars since 100 series shinkansen. however, n700 series shinkansen abandoned eddy current brakes in favour of regenerative brakes, since 14 of 16 cars in trainset used electric motors. in regenerative brakes, motor drives wheel used generator produce electric current, can used charge battery, energy can used again.
